3.g.ii Integration of Palliative Care into Nursing Homes, Module Seven: Actively Dying

This module discusses nursing and interdisciplinary team roles at end-of-life including advocacy, maintaining therapeutic presence, effective communication strategies and care support during the death vigil. Pain and symptom management, psychological and spiritual support, and management of terminal symptoms (delirium and secretions) are reviewed. The signs of imminent death and those to teach family members as well as signs that death has occurred are discussed. Elements of after-death care of the body, including physical preparation and education for family members are identified. Self-care management for staff is addressed.
