Shared Decision Making

Introduction to Shared Decision Making (SDM) is an emerging best practice in behavioral health care. It is designed to ensure that individuals have autonomy and control over the important decisions that affect their lives and health. By putting individuals’ preferences, goals, and values at the center of discussions about health-related decisions, engagement is enhanced. It helps improve communication between service providers and individuals who use their services. Used effectively, shared decision making can make collaboration more productive, efficient, and empowering for both the person using services and those providing them. There are data-informed, technology-based tools to assist this process, such as the MYCHOIS initiative by PSYCKES. This training will provide foundational information on shared decision making in behavioral health and the role of shared decision making in promoting and supporting recovery. Integrating full information and decision-making tools with respectful two-way dialogue will help balance information about mental health conditions and treatment options with an individual’s preferences, goals, and cultural values and beliefs. Participants will acquire basic shared decision-making concepts and applications and learn ways to integrate shared decision-making tools, such as issue cards and option grids, and interventions, such as choice talk, option talk, decision talk, and decisional frameworks, into clinical practice.
