Theodore Strange, MD, FACP is Chair of Medicine, Associate Regional Physician Executive and President, University Physicians Group, a Division of NHPP. He was previously the Vice President of Medical Operations/South Site and Associate Chairman of Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Strange received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate and completed his Internal Medicine Residency, including a year as Chief Resident at Staten Island University in 1989. He began his medical career at Staten Island by developing a multi-specialty group practice – University Physician Group. University Physician Group has over 40 providers, which continue to provide healthcare for patients on Staten Island and South Brooklyn. The group is part of Northwell Physician Health Partners with its Physicians employed in the group working closely with Staten Island University Hospital and Dr. Strange remains the Executive Director of the group as a division of N.H.P.P.
Dr. Strange has led the South Site, currently named Prince’s Bay Campus, of Staten Island University Hospital in keeping a strong community presence for the South Shore of Staten Island for over 25 years. He has insured that the North and South campuses coordinate services and oversees that the quality and delivery of clinical services are transparent. Dr. Strange has served on multiple hospital and community committees including being elected President of the Medical and Dental Staff and President of the Richmond County Medical Society. He has served as the Staten Island representative to the Board of Health and Hospital Corporation for New York City and is currently a member of the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council for over 18 years. Dr. Strange serves as a Board Member of the NYS Department of Health Office of Professional Medical Conduct.
Dr. Strange is a strong advocate of primary care and continues to help in the development of primary care initiatives with the successful implementation in the pioneer ACO with Montefiore. He is involved in the current development of the DSRIP Program on Staten Island. He is Vice Chair of Primary Care for the Northwell Health System Primary Care Service line working to promote, develop and improve access to patients and quality of care for all served.
Dr. Strange is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. Dr. Strange has been recognized with many community service awards and hospital recognitions over the last 32 years for his commitment to the Staten Island community and Staten Island University Hospital. Dr. Strange has participated in 25 NYC Marathons even saving a life four years ago by performing CPR on a fellow runner who collapsed.
Dr. Strange lives on Staten Island with his wife, Valerie for over 35 years. They have four children. One son is currently a resident in Internal Medicine at SIUH and they have recently been gifted by their other son and daughter-in-law with a baby girl as first time grandparents. Their daughter Victoria was married December 2021, and their daughter Elizabeth works for the Plaza Hotel in NYC.
