Screening and assessment are central to identifying and treating clients with co-occurring disorders in a manner that is timely, effective, and tailored to all of their needs. The assessment process helps fulfill a critical need, as most people with co-occurring disorders receive either treatment for only one disorder or no treatment at all.
A serious treatment gap exists between the mental disorder and substance use disorder needs of people with co-occurring disorders and the number of people who receive services. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, of the 9.2 million U.S. adults ages 18 and older who had co-occurring disorders in the past year, more than 90% did not receive treatment for both disorders, and approximately 50% received no treatment at all.
With this program, behavioral health partner organizations conduct screening or assessment for mental health which encompass depression, anxiety, and suicide as well as refer to primary care services when necessary.
All patients who screen positive or have medical needs are referred to the appropriate services for follow up care. This can include using the Staten Island PPS network referral HUB or Valera Health to facilitate in person services or telehealth encounters.
