Peer Engagament in the Emergency Room & Warm Handoff

Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.

Staten Island PPS partnered with the local emergency department to implement a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) agreement model for those coming through the ED for substance use and related emergencies. Three peers cover the ED, 7 days a week which include morning and evening shifts. The peers can provide bedside interventions, opioid overdose prevention, distribute and train on harm reduction efforts and provide warm hand off to treatment services.
